Cuba 1937 - Revenue Proofs imperforate blocks of 4. Security Banknote Company imperforate plate and color proofs of the 50 centavos, 1 Peso and 5 Pesos values of the 1937 Revenues (Timbre Nacional) issue. As far as we know, these are the only three values of this issue that have ever been found as plate proofs. Evidently, these revenue stamps had been in preparation since early 1933. The 50 centavos value was supposed to have pictured the then President of Cuba, Don Gerardo Machado, but as we know, Gerardo Machado was overthrown by the 4th of September 1933 coup d'état. For that reason, the 50 centavos Gerardo Machado stamp was never issued, being replaced by a different 50 centavos stamp depicting the Columbus Cathedral. The Gerardo Machado stamp can only be found as these plate proofs. |
